Grace Giving

We do not understand the tithe (“tenth”), which was mandated in the Old Testament, to carry over into the New Testament age in which we live. Rather, we understand the New Testament to teach “grace” giving. Although many Scripture texts could be given in support of this, we would direct the reader’s attention to I Corinthians 16:1-4 and II Corinthians Chapters 8 and 9. In particular, in I Corinthians 16:2, Paul encourages believers to give on a regular basis, consistent with their income, that is, as God has prospered them. Moreover, in Chapter 9 and verse 7 Paul says, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (NIV)(emphasis added).

Accordingly, we believe that God will lay upon the hearts of His people how much they should give to support His work, consistent with the measure in which He has prospered them. When God has prospered believers abundantly, that amount may exceed 10%. Others may only be able to give less than 10% during certain seasons of life. It is our desire to allow Him to guide the giving process without human “pressure” so that those who give do so with a “cheerful” heart.

Because of our convictions with regard to “grace” giving, we normally do not pass an offering plate in order that giving may be done privately. To that end, we have two marked offering boxes in the foyer of our auditorium into which offerings may be placed discreetly. Some of our members prefer to mail their contributions or deliver them by hand to the Riverwood office.

We occasionally publish or announce certain financial issues for information purposes and to account for how funds have been used, but not to compel giving. We have operated on this basis for many years, and God has always proven Himself faithful to meet our financial needs.
